Party history

The Liberal government that took office in 1891 helped establish New Zealand's organised party system, with branches, supporters and formal policies. The Liberals governed until 1912. Their programme included changes to land and income taxation, while the emergence of Reform and Labour gradually changed the competitive political landscape.

  1. Liberal government takes office

    The formation of the Liberal government marked a move towards an organised national party system.

  2. Land and income tax reforms

    The government introduced income tax and progressive tax rates as part of its taxation programme.

  3. Reform enters government

    The Liberal period of government ended, and Reform took office.
