Party history

NewLabour was established in 1989 by Jim Anderton after he left the Labour Party over its economic policies. Anderton retained Sydenham in the 1990 election, giving the new party parliamentary representation. In 1991 NewLabour joined the Greens and other smaller parties to form the Alliance.

  1. NewLabour established

    Jim Anderton left Labour and established the NewLabour Party.

  2. Sydenham retained

    Anderton won the Sydenham electorate for NewLabour at the general election.

  3. Joins the Alliance

    NewLabour became part of the Alliance alongside the Greens and other smaller parties.
