Party history

United emerged from the remaining Liberal organisation and former Reform supporters. Led by Joseph Ward, it defeated Reform in 1928 and formed a government. United and Reform established a coalition in 1931, and their eventual combination created the National Party in 1936. This was the historical United Party of the interwar years.
